LUXEMBOURG, Oct 7 (Reuters) – Germany’s economic model is not broken but Europe’s biggest economy has lost competitiveness over the past decade, German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Monday.

“We can’t be satisfied with the economic developments in Germany,”
he told journalists ahead of a Eurogroup meeting.

The German economy is expected to contract by 0.2% in 2024, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Monday, cutting the forecast
from a previous projection of 0.3% growth this year.

If realised, this would be the second consecutive year of contraction for Germany’s economy, which was the weakest among its
large euro zone peers last year with a 0.3% decline in gross domestic product.

Lindner said the government was introducing supply-side measures to try to
return the economy to growth.

“After these reforms, Germany will have more competitiveness again,”
Lindner said, adding that the growth initiative was just a first step
for an economic turnaround, “but we have to build on it.”

AMBITION NEEDED

Lindner said “ambition” was needed to keep EU public finances in order, or to put them back in order where necessary.

“I can only encourage everyone to implement structural reforms and to make unpopular decisions,” Lindner said.
“What seems to be unpopular at the moment is the willingness to take responsibility for the next generation and for the stability of the European Union as a whole.”

Lindner said he could not comment on the French
budget plans because he had not had the chance to talk with his French colleagues yet, but he would
do so on Monday evening.

“We should all realise that the credibility of public finances vis-à-vis the capital markets is not to be trifled with,” Lindner said.

“We must credibly reduce our deficits and our debt so that we can continue to finance ourselves well and in a stable manner.”

Amid tepid returns at the box office for Joker: Folie
à Deux, a number of fans of the sequel took to social media over the weekend
in defense of the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 motion picture.

The film, which sees Joaquin Phoenix return to the lead
role of The Joker/Arthur Fleck, debuted to a paltry $40 million at
the domestic box office, good enough for the weekend’s top spot, but less than projections, and half that of
its predecessor.

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie
and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter
nature of sequels to introduce a musical element not present in the first film,
with Lady Gaga joining the franchise.

‘Joker 2 was amazing,’ one user said, adding that it was ‘100%
as divisive as people are making it out to be.
I love that the film didn’t try to be a traditional sequel, and fully committed to the storytelling they presented.
It never deviated to be a film full of Easter eggs or any other crowd pleasing aspects.’

Another user said, ‘I kinda loved Joker 2. I loved how it was structured as a
meta-exploration of the first film’s fandom and the musical elements

‘The Joker 2 hate is so forced like did we watched the same movie????????’ one user said, while another said the

One fan predicted that the motion picture with stand the test of time
with audiences.

‘I may be one of ten people who genuinely liked the Joker 2.

Remember me when society circles back to it in 10 years and
says its a masterpiece,’ said the user. ‘The world just wasn’t

Said one user: ‘I actually thoroughly enjoyed it.
If you don’t like musicals or ‘art house’ style films you probably

The movie’s box office collapse was swift and has many
in the industry wondering: How did the highly anticipated sequel to
an Oscar-winning, billion-dollar film with the same creative team go wrong?
Just three weeks ago, tracking services pegged the movie for a $70 million debut, which would
still have been down a fair amount from Joker’s record-breaking $96.2 million launch
in October 2019.

controversial sequel

Amid the early returns, a number of fans took up for the movie and its cinematic depth, in breaking away from the cookie cutter nature of sequels

Reviews were mixed out of the Venice Film Festival, where it premiered

Venice to 33 percent by its first weekend in theaters. Perhaps even more surprising were the audience reviews:
Ticket buyers polled on opening night gave the film a deadly D CinemaScore.
Exit polls from PostTrak weren’t any better. It
got a meager half star out of five possible.

‘That´s a double whammy that´s very difficult to recover from,’ said Paul
Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore.
‘The biggest issue of all is the reported budget.
A $40 or $50 million opening for a less expensive movie would be a solid debut.’

Joker: Folie à Deux cost at least twice as much as the first
film to produce, though reported figures vary at exactly how pricey
it was to make. Phillips told Variety that it was less than the reported $200
million; Others have it pegged at $190 million. Warner Bros.
released the film in 4,102 locations in North
America. About 12.5 percent of its domestic total came from 415 IMAX screens.

Internationally, it’s earned $81.1 million from 25,788 screens, bringing its
total global earnings estimate to $121.1 million. In the next
two weeks, Joker 2 will also open in Japan and China.

Second place went to Universal and DreamWorks Animation’s The Wild Robot, which added $18.7 million in its
second weekend, bringing its domestic total
to nearly $64 million. Globally, it’s made
over $100 million. Warner Bros.’ Beetlejuice Beetlejuice 
took third place in weekend five, Paramount’s Transformers One landed in fourth and Universal
and Blumhouse’s Speak No Evil rounded out the top five.

The other big new release of the weekend, Lionsgate’s
White Bird, flopped with just $1.5 million from just over 1,000 locations,
despite an A+ CinemaScore.

Overall, the weekend is up from the same frame last year, but Joker’s start
is an unwelcome twist for theater owners hoping to narrow the box office deficit.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie

Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix have said they aspired
to make something as ‘audacious’ as the first film.
The sequel added Lady Gaga into the fold , as a Joker
superfan, and delved further into the mind of Arthur Fleck, imprisoned at
Arkham and awaiting trial for the murders he committed in the first.
It´s also a musical, with elaborately imagined song and dance
numbers to old standards. Gaga even released a companion album called ”Harlequin,’
alongside the film.

The sequel has already been the subject of many think pieces, some who posit that it was deliberately alienating fans of the first movie.
In cruder terms, it´s been called a ‘middle finger.’ But fans often ignore the advice of
critics, especially when it comes to opening their wallets to see revered comic
book characters on the big screen.

‘They took a swing for the fences,’ Dergarabedian said. ‘But except for a couple of outliers, audiences in 2024 seem to want to know what they´re getting when they´re going
to the theater. They want the tried and true, the familiar.’ 

Deadline editor Anthony D´Alessandro thinks the problem started with the idea to make the Joker
sequel a musical. ‘No fan of the original movie wanted to see
a musical sequel,’ he wrote on Saturday.

The first film was also divisive and the subject of much discourse, then about whether it might send the wrong message to the
wrong type of person. And yet people still flocked to see what the fuss was
about. Joker went on to pick up 11 Oscar nominations, including best picture and best director, and three wins.
It also made over $1 billion and was the highest-grossing
R-rated film of all time, until this summer when Marvel’s
Deadpool & Wolverine took the crown.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S.
and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures
will be released Monday.

Joker: Folie À Deux director Todd Phillips ‘wanted nothing to do
with DC’ during making of the $200million flop film, a new report has claimed.

The hotly-anticipated sequel to the 2019 billion dollar Oscar-winning film – stars Joaquin Phoenix
and Lady Gaga and was considered a surefire hit for Warner Bros Pictures – but was slammed by
critics and failed to ignite at the box office.

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being a musical and ‘ignoring’ the DC fanbase – with an agent familiar with
Phillips’ process telling Variety he ‘wanted nothing
to do with DC’ during the making of the film, with DC bosses
James Gunn and Peter Safran notably absent from the film’s LA premiere afterparty last month.

A source said: ‘If the first movie was about some down-on-his-luck, mentally ill guy in a downtrodden city, it makes maybe $150 [million] worldwide.

Not a billion. People showed up because that guy was Joker.’

In an apparent snub by Phillips, the opening sequence of the film does not include a
DC Studios logo.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of
31% and a critic score of 32%

Several frictions are said to have developed between Phillips, DC and Warner- with claims that Michael DeLuca,
Chairperson of Warner Bros. Entertainment,
and CEO Pamela Abdy seemed ‘unwilling’ to say no to Phillips due to his huge past successes.

It is claimed Phillips would ‘only’ speak with
DeLuca and Abdy rather than Gunn and Safran – who took control of DC two months before production began on Joker 2 in December 2022.

Gunn and Safran did attend the first director’s cut screening for the studio but Phillips fueled rift speculation when he told a reporter:
‘With all due respect to them, this is kind of a Warner Bros.
movie.’

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav also
met with Phillips  shortly after WarnerMedia and Discovery merged in April 2022 and was ‘open to filming in Los Angeles if the director would make the sequel at a lower
price point.’

The studio wanted to film in London which would have cost around 20
per cent less.

However, Phillips insisted on filming in LA with the budget remaining static. 

The sequel has been roundly criticized for being

Insiders also claim studio bosses did not want to premiere the
film at the Venice Film Festival, but Phillips pushed back – with
a Warner spokesman saying the studio ‘fully supported the decision to bring the
film to Venice.

Joker: Folie À Deux has garnered the lowest CinemaScore in comic book
movie history as the film bombed at the box office on opening night. 

It has only made $114million worldwide against its $200million budget. 

The psychological musical thriller — which has been criticized as ‘bleak’ and ‘disappointing’ — officially released in theaters on Friday, October
4, but it only raked in $20 million at the domestic
box office, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Phoenix reprised his role as the Joker in the sequel, which had earned him an Oscar for his portrayal in the 2019 film,
while Gaga took on the role of Harleen Lee Quinzel (Harley Quinn). 

However, Joker: Folie À Deux has been given a D rating on CinemaScore — the lowest score for a
comic book movie. 

Madame Web — which notably also flopped in theaters earlier this year and also received terrible reviews — holds a higher score with a C+.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie currently holds an audience score of 31%
and a critic score of 32%. 

The sequel is projected to rake in less that $50 million at the domestic box office during the entirety of opening weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. 

Weeks ago, the movie had been projected to bring in around
$70 million – but the number has since drastically dropped. 

Joker (2019) notably opened with $96.2 million when the film first released in theaters – and eventually landed a little over $1
billion in the global box office. 

The first movie – which was also directed by Todd Phillips – had a budget of between $55 and
$70 million. However, the budget increased for Folie À Deux to around $200 million. 

The 2019 movie garnered praise and positive
reviews from both critics and audiences – and won the Golden Lion during the 76th Venice International Film Festival. 

Joaquin received an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the
Joker (Arthur Fleck) – and the film garnered an additional Academy Award for Best Original Score. 

The sequel also screened during the Venice International
Film Festival last month in September, where it earned a
12-minute standing ovation, per Deadline.

sequel is just as bleak and formally daring as its predecessor’.

Meanwhile, the Irish Times’ Donald Clarke gave the movie just two stars but credited
Phillips’ work for making a sequel following the first movie’s $1billion success.

Financial Times critic Danny Leigh said although Gaga worked
hard to bump the ratings up in the sequel, Phillips appeared to have no idea what to do with her. 

Giving a three star rating, The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw claimed the
movie proves ‘claustrophobic’ and ‘repetitive.’

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first
time author dreams of – massive amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and
on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of
how Qantas sold us out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him
being called ‘upgrade Albo’ – and calls for an inquiry, Aston told
Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’, but
reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line
to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce
– which the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to
Rome, London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese
chose to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books and said he was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal
Party staffer… I don’t see declarations he’s a former Qantas
employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo
of Aston that refers to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first line of the first
page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just
before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s
response gave the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the
untrue claims about him the Prime Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this
many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible
circumstances that they create,’ he said.

latest blow to his credibility has led to calls for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part to get
this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics a long time and that kind of
behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost every year for 12
years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front
row of the International Grand Slam. He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve
ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel
to be booked in economy, then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their
flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty
when the flight closes, you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is converted and you are guaranteed.
You’re not going to the airport crossing your fingers going
“Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing
you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who
can issue those types of upgrades is the CEO.
No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end
of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands
the attraction for politicians to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too. Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go
back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business,
but they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’

Namibians returned to vote on Friday in 36 polling stations reopened two days
after a chaotic election, set to test the ruling party’s 34-year grip on power, was

long delays and labelled a “sham” by the opposition.

Some people waited 12 hours in line to vote in presidential and legislative polls, billed as the toughest yet for the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party, in power since Namibia’s 1990 independence from South africa.

Wednesday’s queues were caused by many technical
problems, including issues with tablets used to register
voters and shortages of ballot papers.

In some cases, torches used to show up invisible ink had run out of batteries and mobile
voting teams had left areas with voters still in the queues, it
said.

Facing criticism from both voters and parties, the electoral commission extended the vote for a second time,
giving Namibians until Saturday evening to vote.

In the capital Windhoek, at the only polling station picked to reopen, about 60 people showed up on Friday, including Kluivert Muuondjo who
arrived at 4:30 am.

The 21-year-old student said he had waited in line until
11:00 pm on Wednesday but left before being able to vote as he had
exams the next day.

“Everyone will have the chance to vote,” he said.
But because Namibians can vote at any given polling station, he was worried “everyone will flock to one place again.”

The disarray led to angry complaints from opposition parties with some calling for a halt in the electoral process.

Opposition parties were scheduled to meet on Friday and issue a joint statement,
according to Christine Aochamus who represents the
Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) party.

Youth unemployment, enduring inequalities and the emergence of a generation born after independence are challenging support
towards SWAPO which has ruled since 1990.

Its candidate, vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, who could become the first
woman to lead the country if elected, could face an unprecedented second round in the mineral rich country.

“To open only one place in Khomas (the region of which the capital is part of) is absurd,”
said voter Ensley Engermund, who also said he couldn’t vote on Wednesday because of long queues despite trying
four different polling stations.

“Only 1.5 millions voters are registered and we get this chaos?” asked the 49-year-old security agent.

“It was to get people frustrated.”

The shocking move left director Todd Haynes and indie superproducer Christine Vachon scrambling to find a replacement for
the lead role, which was ultimately unsuccessful due to the extraordinarily short time before filming. 

Vachon later called the experience a ‘nightmare,’ but she defended the film from critics
who claimed only a gay actor should have been cast in Phoenix’s role.

She reminded the writers of rude social media comments that Phoenix was the person who
brought the project to her and Haynes, meaning he couldn’t be separated from the film.

Vachon also defended her production company’s record of hiring actors in the LGBTQ community, and she said that the criticism was only making the ‘terrible situation even worse.’

Phoenix and Top Gun: Maverick actor Danny Ramirez, 31, were to play onscreen lovers in the 1930s-set film,
which was said to include ‘explicit sexual content.’

production in the first place.

Phoenix has reportedly suffered from cold feet on multiple
previous projects that he ultimately continued with.

manufacturers required to provide scientific data
demonstrating a product is appropriate for the protection of public health.

Joe Aston got the kind of book launch every first time author dreams of – massive
amounts of free publicity online, in newspapers and on TV and radio. 

And it was all thanks to Anthony Albanese’s ill-informed attack
on Aston over what was written in his book, The Chairman’s Lounge – The Inside Story of how Qantas sold us
out.

Despite the resultant terrible publicity – which has led to him being called ‘upgrade Albo’ –
and calls for an inquiry, Aston told Daily Mail Australia his book is ‘not
a hit job on Anthony Albanese’.

Aston insisted he’s ‘not trying to get a scalp’,
but reiterated that the Prime Minister ‘had a direct line to Alan Joyce’.

The book claims Mr Albanese got 22 upgrades from economy
on Qantas flights by personally requesting them from the airline’s then CEO Mr Joyce – which
the Prime Minister has categorically denied.

According to unnamed Qantas ‘insiders’, 11 of the 22 flights Mr Albanese got upgrades
for were ‘privately funded’ and included overseas trips to Rome,
London, Los Angeles and Honolulu. 

But instead of addressing the claim, Mr Albanese chose
to shoot the messenger and, in turn, shot himself in the foot. 

He said Aston was using the accusations to sell books
and said he was hiding his employment history. 

‘I don’t see declarations that he’s a former Liberal Party staffer… I don’t see declarations
he’s a former Qantas employee,’ the Prime Minister said. 

But before the book even gets to the contents page there is a photo of Aston that refers
to him as the then-Qantas corporate communications senior adviser.

And the first chapter of the book reveals that he worked for then-Liberal MP Bruce Baird, who held the southern Sydney seat of Cook
before Scott Morrison. 

‘My professional history is not a secret or not disclosed, it’s in the first
line of the first page of the book,’ Aston said on Tuesday night, just before his book launch. 

Though he was grateful for the free publicity Mr Albanese’s response gave
the book, Aston was still ‘staggered’ at the untrue claims about him the Prime
Minister made. 

‘He’s under enormous pressure and I know, I’ve seen this many times with public figures and leaders who struggle to see their own part in it, the terrible circumstances that
they create,’ he said.

Asked if Mr Albanese had been poorly advised in his attack, Aston, who is a former Australian Financial Review columnist,
wonders if the Prime Minister ‘even listens to advice at this point’.

‘All he’s doing is talking around the issue and he’s blaming me and he’s
blaming other MP’s for also taking upgrades (on Qantas flights).

‘He’s avoiding the only thing that he can’t talk about,
which is, did you ask Qantas for confirmed upgrades on your private holidays when you
were the Transport Minister? The answer is “yes” and he’s desperately trying to avoid saying it.’

Smelling blood, Opposition leader Peter Dutton said the
Prime Minister should refer himself to the
anti-corruption commission over the flight upgrades.

Coming on top of Mr Albanese’s tone deaf purchase of a $4.3million clifftop
mansion while so many people are struggling to pay their mortgage or rent, the latest blow to his credibility has led to calls
for him to resign.

Aston refuses to be drawn on this, though. 

‘I never expected this (part of the book) to even this part
to get this far. I really am shocked at how it’s blown up.

anyone who reads the book will learn that this book is not a hit job on Anthony Albanese.
This book is about Qantas. 

‘Anthony Albanese is an example of how Qantas influences politicians on both sides of the aisle, Labor, Liberal, National, you
name it. They’ve been doing it for more than a generation.

‘They’re the best influence peddler in Australia. I’m not here trying to get a scalp.
That’s not what this book is about and it never was.’

But the conversation Daily Mail Australia had with
Aston mirrors the conversations being had across Australia and eventually winds up back on Mr Albanese. 

‘Even I’ve underestimated how fed up the public is with the freebie mindset of politicians,’ he
said.

‘And unfortunately for Albanese, he’s been in politics
a long time and that kind of behaviour is quite normalised to him, is what I’ve seen. 

‘I mean, he loves the free concert tickets and sitting at the front row of the Australian Open Tennis. 

‘I went to the Australian Open Tennis as a journalist almost
every year for 12 years and he was the only Prime Minister (I saw there).

‘Those tickets are worth thousands of dollars to sit in the front row of the International Grand Slam.
He’s the first Prime Minister who I’ve ever seen do that.

‘That to me is a sign that he doesn’t quite get what it looks like to others when he’s on the gravy
train. And I think (the claims in the book are) just another example of that.’

In Australian politics it’s regular practise for an MP’s travel to be booked in economy,
then someone in their office phones the airline and asks if their flight can be upgraded. 

The difference with the Prime Minister is that ‘he had a very direct
line to Alan Joyce,’ Aston said.

‘The other thing is there’s a difference between an upgrade
where it’s in the booking and if the seat’s empty when the flight closes,
you’ll get upgraded.

‘This is different. This is a confirmed upgrade where the ticket is
converted and you are guaranteed. You’re not going to the
airport crossing your fingers going “Geez, I hope there is a spare seat”.

‘You’re guaranteed. You turn up knowing you’re getting a seat and the only person at Qantas who can issue
those types of upgrades is the CEO. No other executive can do that.

‘So it is beyond question that Alan joints authorised these upgrades (for
Anthony Albanese).’

Aston enjoyed many upgrades to the pointy end
of planes during his time as a travel journalist, and understands the attraction for politicians
to get up there. 

‘These things are tempting and it’s human nature too.
Once you’ve experienced the front of the plane, it’s very hard to go back.

‘For politicians, they run around with all these staff and they’ve got chauffeured cars and they fly in business, but
they don’t get paid like CEOs …

‘They’re not in a situation where they can afford to
go flying around in the front of the plane on personal travel. 

‘A normal person would say “Therefore I won’t (fly business class). But (for politicians) it’s a culture of entitlement.’

Aston is careful to point out that most people would say politicians are ‘very well paid compared to the average worker’.

But that doesn’t stop some MPs from desperately seeking a free ride, whether it’s a flight upgrade, concert tickets or the executive box at sporting events. 

Late on Wednesday night, a spokeswoman Mr Albanese said ‘The Prime Minister did not ever call Alan Joyce seeking an upgrade’.

‘All travel has been appropriately declared and is a matter of public record.’
